The Truth About Dog Bones & Chews: What's Best For Your Dog In 2024!
There are thousands of different treats and chews on the shelves today, some good and some bad. After running a pet store for over 20 years, We're here to help you find what’s best for your pup and how to avoid some bad choices.
First of all, let’s talk about what makes a BAD dog chew.
1. Splintering Risk.
Cooking can weaken the structure of the bone, making it more brittle and prone to cracking.
The easiest way to avoid this is to buy pet specific bones that are responsibly sourced. Don't just look for the cheapest bones you can find, this is usually an indicator that some safety aspects were skipped along the way.
2. Chemicals and additives.
Do you want to keep an eye out for artificial preservatives, artificial colors, and artificial flavors. These can contribute to various health issues, such as cancer and behavioral problems. You also want to avoid excessive salt and sugar, which is not healthy for dogs.
Think about it like this: You want to imitate your dogs ancestral diet. Bass your decisions around this when it comes to their food and their treats.
Can dogs easily consume sugar or preservatives in the wild? No. then why would we choose to feed them to our pets at home? It makes no sense and can lead to major issues, don't do this.
Look for all natural treats, chews and bones instead. Deer and elk antlers, bullhorns like this one, and even our peak chaser chews have zero artificial flavoring or preservatives and will keep your dog busy for hours.
3. Appropriate size.
This is a big one, and is one of the mistakes that most pet owners make.
We don't really see Chihuahua owners buying large Dino bones to keep their pup busy, but we do occasionally see owners of larger breeds looking at some of the smaller treats.
You need to be careful when it comes to choosing the right sized chew or treat for your dog. The last thing you want is for them to get a little too excited and choke on it.
Even the most experienced bone chewer can accidentally choke if they get too excited when company shows up. It only takes a second!
This is a mistake. It's very easy to make when it comes to buying treats and choose online. Unfortunately, some websites just don't make it clear as to how big a treat is.
We do our best to help our customers online with this, and we are always available for questions on our YouTube comments or Facebook page if you aren't sure what you should be feeding your pet.
Now that you know all about the mistakes to avoid when it comes to choosing bones and chews, we can get to the good part of the video.
